Der Marktplatz widerspiegelt den Wohlstand der Stadt und ihre durch den Bergbau und die Verhüttung des Kupfererzes bewirkte Blüte im 16. Jahrhundert. Die westliche Schmalseite wird durch das von 1519 bis 1531 erbaute Rathaus begrenzt.
